Tom Tomorrow: 25 Years of Tomorrow

Iowa City native Dan Perkins, aka Tom Tomorrow, is the creator of This Modern World, a weekly political and satirical cartoon which has been a mainstay of the alternative press for more than two and a half decades. He says that the country's tense political environment lately has been challenging in many ways, and the speed at which news is made is particularly difficult.

"I can't count the number of times that I've had to rewrite a cartoon or a line or replace a panel or something because I would file the cartoon on a Friday afternoon and hope to take the weekend off and something would happen over the weekend. There is no more time off; I'm keeping on eye on Twitter all the time to see what will happen next," he says.

During this River to River interview, Perkins talks with host Ben Kieffer about his work, the changing political climate in the United States, and growing up in Iowa City.

Perkins will be speaking on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. at the Englert Theatre as part of The Witching Hour festival.
