CHENETTE                          Rural Symphony
DVORAK                              Suite in A, Op. 98b
COPLAND                             Suite from The Tender Land

Commissioned by the Blanden Memorial Art Museum and the Fort Dodge Area Symphony, Jonathan Chenette’s Rural Symphony is a three-movement work inspired by photographs of daily life in rural Iowa. This uniquely Midwestern musical portrait includes the movements “Milking Time” and “Becoming Prairie.” Dvorak’s Suite in A, commonly referred to as the “American Suite,” was influenced by the composer’s visit to the United States, a trip which included a summer vacation in Spillville, Iowa. Closing the program is a suite from Copland’s only full-length opera, The Tender Land, which depicts the story of a young girl about to leave her home on a Midwestern farm.
