This week’s Symphonies of Iowa broadcast features the Des Moines Symphony’s “Elgar’s Enigma Variations – Beyond the Score” (formatted by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra) concert. The program focuses on Elgar’s Enigma’s Variations. Also included in this broadcast will be Eroica from the DMSO’s Beethoven One to Nine project recorded throughout their 2003-4 season.
The great English composer Edward Elgar wrote his much-loved Enigma Variations to depict “friends pictured within,” but the titular enigma is an unplayed “theme” that Elgar often hinted at but never revealed. The Des Moines Symphony performs the complete Enigma Variations, including the sublime “Nimrod” variation. Join us on Sunday, May 20 at 4 p.m. and again on Monday, May 21 at 7 p.m. for this Symphonies of Iowa broadcast!
