Reflecting on Pulse Nightclub Shootings: 1 Year Later

A year ago, 49 people were killed at an Orlando nightclub in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. During this half hour of River to River, host Ben Kieffer talks with Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel, executive director of One Iowa and Brian Bruening, who joined us to talk about the shootings last year after penning an editorial in the Des Moines Register titled "I'm gay and married to a Muslim and today I am not ok."

Hoffman-Zinnel says that given the anniversary of the shooting, he's troubled that President Trump has not issued a proclamation regarding pride month.

"June is LGBT pride month, and over the last eight years, the White House has sent a note of a proclamation of pride month. This year, we haven't had that yet," he says. "That proclamation set a tone, sent a message to the community."
