Tune in Saturday at 7AM or Sunday at 6PM to hear two irresistible works from 20th-Century Russia performed by the U of Iowa Symphony led by William LaRue Jones. UI piano professor Ksenia Nosikova performs Prokofiev's finest piano concerto, the Third; the orchestra then performs Shostakovich's Ninth, a work that thumbed its impudent nose at the expectation that "Ninth Symphony" means "heavy and serious." Professor Jones, the Director of Orchestral Studies at the U of Iowa, was called by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune “one of the most active and versatile symphonic conductors in America today, possessing a unique ability to work effectively with musicians at all levels of performing capability and experience." The broadcast is part of IPR's University Concert series.
