Politics Day: Grinnell Poll Says 43 Percent Would Not Reelect Trump

Grinell's polls show both positive and negative outlooks for Trump in 2020.

Looking forward to the 2020 presidential election, the Grinnell College National Poll says 36 percent of likely voters would elect President Trump for office and 43 percent plan on voting for someone else.

These data points are part of the first round of results released from this brand new poll, conducted by polling expert J. Ann Selzer, who was named “Best Pollster in Politics” by the blog FiveThirtyEight, in collaboration with Grinnell. The results look at Trump’s favorability, the NFL protest controversy, immigration issues, and more.

Though political polls have garnered critcism since the 2016 election, Selzer says Grinnell’s results are different, relying on high quality, scientifically-driven data .

“There are so many polls out there,” Selzer says. “I know which ones they’re talking about and they’re not mine.”

On this politics day segment of River to River, host Ben Kieffer talks with Seltzer and associate professor of political science and specialist in American politics Peter Hanson of Grinnell College.
