Iowa's Local Food Economy

Jason Mrachina
Produce at the Des Moines Farmers Market

According to regional food coordinators, there is no local food network like the one in Iowa. The connection between farmers and distributors is very strong, and the network continues to grow larger every year. Even so, about 80% of the food Iowans consume is from out of state.

Today on Talk of Iowa, host Charity Nebbe talks with several food producers and coordinators, to get an idea of how local Iowa food can be produced and sold at larger scales – so it can be consumed here in the place it was grown. Also – Chef Ben Halperins of Augusta Restaurant in Oxford, talks about the big, mysterious, juicy "turducken."
