Gov. Reynolds Waits to Call Special Session for the Legislature

Iowa Lt. Gov.'s office

Yesterday in Clear Lake, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that she will wait until September to decide whether or not to call a special session for the Iowa Legislature to discuss and act on the looming budget problems the state is facing.

“This is a budget consideration and a political decision as well. So, the question is you call the legislature back and share the political blame. But with the way the legislature is polarized, you’re going to have Democrats who don’t want to take the blame, and Republicans who don’t want to seem like poor stewards of the budget,” says James Lynch, political reporter for the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

During this hour of River to River, Dean Borg talks with Lynch, Radio Iowa News Director Kay Henderson, Des Moines Register Columnist Kathie Obrodovich, and Iowa Public Radio’s Statehouse Correspondent Joyce Russell. UNI political science associate professor Chris Larimer also joins the conversation.
