Getting Homes Winter Ready

Pat Blank/IPR

People who need help with the cost of getting their home ready for winter can get it from Green Iowa AmeriCorps. Its programs help low income, elderly, disabled, and veteran households with such things as caulking, minor insulation, and eliminating drafts. Outreach coordinator, Brad James, says the program is about both education and assistance.

"Our main focus is energy audits and weatherizations, that probably takes up two or three days every week," James says.  "But we also do education outreach events, a big thing that we’re doing this year is we’re going to an after school program working with kids every week, we’re going to be doing some homeowner education classes."

Green Iowa AmeriCorps is based at the University of Northern Iowa and has additional sites in five other counties.
