Early Voting Underway on Iowa City's $192 Million School Bond Proposal

Early voting is underway on a $191.5 million bond question for the Iowa City Community School District.

It is considered the largest K-12 bond in state history, and it is supposed to fund the district’s "Facilities Master Plan."

Kate Moreland is a parent who has been advocating for the bond. She says she is excited for all the schools to be made accessible for students with disabilities, and for the installation of air conditioning.

"I think this vote is a huge opportunity for our community to come together and ensure that we have equitable learning environments for all of our students in the district," Moreland says.

Moreland says the district has completed facilities projects on time and under budget in recent years.

Martha Hampel is treasurer for the campaign opposing the school bond. She says the bond language is too vague.

"We don’t trust the current school district administration to work with the school board to make sure the things that are being promised actually get done," Hampel says.

Hampel also lists the district’s use of seclusion rooms, school consolidation, and a "culture of intimidation" among many other reasons for opposing the bond question.

The school board election is Sept. 12.
