Age of the Microbrewery

John Bollwitt
More than half of all U.S. brewing facilities are microbreweries

Traditional, big American breweries are in the midst of a global identity crisis. Meanwhile, craft beer microbreweries in the U.S. are flourishing like never before.

In this encore edition of River to River, host Ben Kieffer talks with Sean Lewis, author of the new book We Make Beer about changes in the quickly fermenting brewing business. Also, several Iowa brewers join the show including: Jay Jubeck, of Jubeck New World Brewing Company in Dubuque, and Darren Vanden Berge and Kevin Hall, of Black Hollow Brewing Company in Des Moines.

“It gives a local community a spot to go and have a beer, relax and either discuss local events or eat local food," Sean Lewis says of breweries. "It’s become the new pub; what a pub used to be in the older days.”
