Recent reports on an Iowa-based residential school for foster children detail accounts of physical and verbal abuse, excessive restraint and segregation, and sex crimes against students.

On this news buzz edition of River to River, guest host Emily Woodbury speaks with investigative reporter and Des Moines Readers’ Watchdog columnist Lee Rood about her reporting on Clarinda Academy. The facility, which houses hundreds of foster children from around the country in southwest Iowa, faces a civil trial this spring after hiring a convicted felon who allegedly sexually assaulted a student at the facility.

Also in the hour: a look at recent Iowa State Legislature committee chair appointments with University of Northern Iowa professor of political science Chris Larimer; a discussion on changes to simulated firearm rules in Sioux City with Iowa Public Radio reporter Katie Peikes, winter road safety dos and don'ts with Dan McGehee of the National Advanced Driving Simulator, and seasonal weekend music recommendations from Iowa Public Radio Studio One Senior producer, Mark Simmet.
